Is My Child Ready for School? A Simple Checklist for Parents
A warm, practical checklist to help Thoothukudi parents know if their 4–6 year old is ready for LKG, UKG or big school.

Every parent in Thoothukudi asks the same loving question: is my little one ready for school? The good news is that “ready” has very little to do with reading fat books or writing perfectly. It’s about confidence, curiosity and a few everyday skills.
Here’s a gentle checklist you can use at home.
Everyday independence
Children feel proud when they can do small things by themselves. Look for whether your child can:
- Eat a snack without too much help
- Wash and wipe their hands
- Put on shoes (even if the straps need a little help)
- Tell an adult when they need the toilet
These little wins build the confidence school asks for.
Talking and listening
School is full of words — songs, stories, instructions and friends. It helps if your child can:
- Say what they want in short sentences
- Follow a simple two-step instruction (“pick up the cup and bring it here”)
- Sit and listen to a short story
- Ask a question when they’re curious
Playing with others
The biggest “subject” in preschool is friendship.
Sharing, taking turns and saying sorry are huge milestones. If your child is still learning these, that’s perfectly normal — it’s exactly what a good kindergarten helps with.
Curiosity over perfection
You don’t need a child who already reads. You need a child who wants to know things. Counting steps, naming colours, asking “why is the sky blue?” — these are the real signs of a ready learner.
How we help at Little Stars
In our Nursery, LKG and UKG programs, we build readiness through play — not pressure. Children grow confident, social and school-ready at their own happy pace.
